The first edition of the Khelo India University Games was organized by the Odisha government and backed by the Sports Authority of India, Association of Indian Universities, National Sports Federation, and Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The inaugural games, was held here in Odisha from February 22 to March 1, saw more than 4000 athletes from 176 institutes vying for top honours in 17 sports. The vision behind hosting this multi-discipline sporting extravaganza was to identify talent who can be trained for the Olympics and contribute to the country’s eventual goal of topping the medal tally in such games. The athletes competed in 17 disciplines namely archery, athletics, boxing, fencing, judo, swimming, weightlifting, wrestling, badminton, basketball, football, hockey, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, rugby and kabaddi. Most of the events were held at different venues within the KIIT University Campus here. Badminton and table tennis were held at JN Indoor Stadium in Cuttack while athletics was held at the Kalinga Stadium. This sporting event was part of the Khelo India programme that has been introduced to revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports and establishing India as a great sporting nation. It is the largest university level sports competition in India. Panjab University finished first with 46 total medals that included 17 gold, 19 silver and 10 bronze medals. Savitribai Phule Pune University and Punjabi University were second and third with 37 and 33 total medals respectively.
